Straight up — SF Broadcasts is complete obscurity to me. Here are two videos of the track "Out Soon" (or so I think) by Nachtbote. BTW, "Nachtbote" and "I'm Feeling Lucky" are not a work-friendly combination. The first video of “Out Soon” works off textured audio/visual.Past the slow-drip (obligatory) spiral-synth workout lies ear-violence accentuated by shimmering shocks of cackling noise. And the camera flicker over an inevitable digital smear absorbs tentative gaze. So, maybe this orange is a person, or a planet alignment; I don’t know what it all means. Mesmerized, viewers are restricted by the video's unstoppable voyeurism and pulled back at the end, through venomous disintegration of sound for one last peep of "meaning." It’s almost Hitchcockian, or is it Trier these days (Ben Pearson, Alex Peterson, Zachary Block, Derek Smith, Steve Babish)?The narrative I have followed in this is my own. Bottom-line: “Is the internet tangible?” My 95-year-old grandma pointed out, “Even if you compare the song to a cassette's [sound of magnet to reel], won’t the music in both videos only have the quality of the [digital sound]?” :^X Okay, well, in comparison, the two videos are both equally violent. The live recording expresses this through ripping volume and looped button-/key-mashing. Visually, the strobe light, surrounded by smaller colorful lights, accentuate the biggest mystery: who is Nachtbote? For answers, find out on SF Broadcasts. "What a strange little tape. “Up to Us” provides a strange synth journey that’s as eclectic as it is fun. Really, the whole thing plays like some kind of bizarre mixtape, switching sounds and styles on nearly every track. Still, there’s enough of a common thread running through the whole affair so that nothing seems to come entirely out of left field.There is no track listing, which I think adds to the sense of musical discovery, as there are relatively few expectations to cloud perception of the music. Sounds range from far-out synth noodling to ’80s movie soundtrack style music to instrumental electronic disco sounds, so chances are there’s bound to be at least one bit buried in here somewhere to appeal to even the most discriminating tastes.For me, “Up to Us” is definitely one of those albums that seems to grow on me a little bit each time I hear it. This is not to say that I didn’t enjoy the tape to begin with, but I found myself looking forward to certain sounds and sections on the tape as I got more familiar with it. Jazzed organ dances in the middle of bubbled owl calls imitating underwater slasher flicks. Side B employs some garbled vocal samples throughout, setting them against a drifting backbeat and more muted, puffy synth textures. "Star Wars alternate universe lazer tag soundtracks to burn a hole in your brain. This cassette rip, was given to us by Stefan Kushima, who runs the label SF Broadcasts, and who is the man behind the projects Bobby Lazar, Cruise Family, Easy Rider and about a bazillion more. Despite his incredibly prolific output, all of his releases are great, and this is one of his best. The project Cruise Family is the flagship of the SF Broadcasts label and its electro synth space vibes stay true to the label’s dayglo sci-fi aesthetic. The future looks neon indeed. Both sides are highly recommended.
SIDE A: Electromagnetic pulses and futuristic club music. The first ten minutes consist of sunny splatters of bright keyboard and then the last five minutes melts into the greatest rave ever thrown inside of a Borg cube. Such a trip.SIDE B: A free-fall of lovely synth cascades into a tour of a dark subterranean Martian colony and then dissolves into an amazing 80’s sci-fi drum n’ bass jam."
